What Are Dental Bridges?

Bridges consist of a series of dental crowns strung together to replace one or more missing teeth. The crowns on either end of the bridge are attached to your remaining natural teeth, which support the entire structure. With traditional bridges, the crowns in the center of the bridge are called pontics. Pontics are designed to fill the gap and keep your remaining teeth from drifting into the space themselves.

The other kind of dental bridge is secured in placed by dental implants. With implant-retained bridges, no crowns have to be placed over your existing teeth. A dental implant is instead inserted on both ends of the gap in your smile. Crowns are then placed over the implants, with the pontics in between them. Implant-retained bridges come with a few advantages over their traditional counterparts, such as preserving your jawbone.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Dental Bridge?

The majority of patients who are missing one to three teeth are good candidates for a dental bridge. However, you must first be in relatively good oral health, which means having no tooth decay or gum disease. These problems must first be treated before a bridge can be placed.

In order for you to be fitted with a traditional bridge, the teeth on either end of your gap must be strong and healthy enough to support the bridgework. In order for you to get implant-retained bridges, you must have adequate jawbone density, or be able and willing to undergo a bone graft.

The Process of Getting a Bridge

It may take a few appointments with either Dr. Comfort or Dr. Morgan to complete your bridge journey. First, we may need to prepare the teeth on both ends of your gap, called the abutment teeth, so that the crowns can more easily attach to them. Then, we’ll take detailed and highly accurate impressions of your prepped teeth so that your bridge fits like a charm. While your permanent bridge is being crafted in a dental lab from these impressions, we can fix you with a temporary bridge to protect your exposed teeth and gums.

You’ll return for a second appointment in a few weeks, when your permanent bridge is ready. You’ll try it on, and we’ll make adjustments accordingly until it fits perfectly in your smile.
