Children’s Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings

Children should start attending regular dental checkups as soon as their first tooth appears, and at these initial appointments, Dr. Comfort simply performs a gentle exam to make sure a child’s teeth and mouth are developing correctly. She’ll share ways on how you can take care of your new smile at home, and as your child grows and matures, so will their care. Cleanings will eventually become part of the routine, and our overall goal will be to prevent tooth decay and quickly address any problems that pop up along the way.

Athletic Mouthguards

Dental injuries are a risk for every child athlete, whether they are in elementary, middle, or high school. To make sure your child’s smile ends a game in the same condition it started, Dr. Comfort can provide them with a custom-made mouthguard. Unlike generic appliances you’ll find at the store, her guards are fitted for each unique patient and offer a much higher level of comfort and protection. Because they allow a child to speak and breathe easily, your little athlete will be more likely to use it, meaning they have a better chance of staying safe on the field, mat, or court!

Dental Sealants

The first permanent teeth to come in are usually the six-year molars, and thanks to their location and grooved surfaces, they are also the first place most children develop cavities. Dental sealants can prevent this by placing a thin, clear layer of composite resin directly onto the enamel. This will literally seal the teeth off from plaque, food particles, and bacteria that could lead to decay. They only take a few minutes to apply, but they can provide trusted cavity protection for over 10 years.

Non-Nutritive Habits

Is your child still sucking their thumb even though their teeth are starting to come in? This previously adorable habit can severely throw off the alignment of the teeth as well as the development of the jaw, but as any parent will tell you, getting a child to stop is harder than it sounds! Fortunately, Dr. Comfort has helped countless children do just this using proven strategies that focus more on positive reinforcement rather than punishment. If you need help getting your child to stop sucking their thumb, give us a call, and we’ll help you put together a plan.

Pulp Therapy

Pulp therapy is used to treat teeth that have developed damage or an infection in their inner “nerve” called the dental pulp. This type of problem often leads to extreme dental pain, but thankfully, this procedure can usually be completed in just one visit and provide complete relief. After numbing a child’s tooth, Dr. Comfort will remove the pulp, clean the tooth, and then fill it. Any healthy pulp will be left in place to ensure a child’s tooth is able to function like normal in the years to come.
